Karpov did indeed run out of time...
Throughout the match Karpov was way behind on time... when the match finished, Kasparov still had 8 minutes left...

I think the point why karpov gave up this game is the possible royal fork of the knight on f3 which has to be avoided by karpov. perhaps possible ...
To use this advantage kasparov would first play Bxd5, karpov would captuere rook d8 then with the knight. Karpov can not recapture the bishop on d5 with his bishop because after white queen takes b5 the bad fork is not to stop without running away with his queen. but that becomes dangerous, too
