Haven't wrapped my head around distant, let alone indirect, opposition yet -- too many exceptions! But thanks for an excellent summary of the basic principles.
I'm still torn between studying openings versus studying endgames. I used to favour the endgame (probing the "true mystery" of chess and all of that), but recently I switched to openings, not the least because studying openings seems a better conversation topic than endgames. I guess balance is key.
